Unit 5 Weather Study Guide

Lesson 1: What is the water cycle?

Vocabulary: water cycle, atmosphere, evaporation, condensation, precipitation, runoff, groundwater

*Describe the water cycle and the role that evaporation, condensation, and precipitation play in it.
*Explain how the sun provides the energy for the water cycle.
*Describe the path of precipitation from cloud to ground to runoff to groundwater

Lesson 2: What are types of weather?

Vocabulary: weather, humidity, air pressure, cirrus, stratus, cumulus, and cumulonimbus clouds

*Identify factors that make up weather (air temperature, humidity, air pressure, and precipitation)
*Explain how weather conditions are measured.
*Describe what causes wind to blow.
*Understand that air participles are closer together in cold air than in warmer air
*Be able to explain how a cloud is formed.
*Know the differences between types of clouds and what weather they can predict.
*Explain the different types of precipitation and how they form.
*Describe how clouds are formed.

Lesson 3: How is weather predicted?

Vocabulary: air mass, front

*Explain how air masses form.
*Explain how fronts affect/change weather.
*Explain how meteorologists get data/information about the weather.
*Name types of severe weather.
*Explain how hurricanes are formed.

*Explain why it is important for people’s lives and safety to be able to predict the weather.
